What Is Monoblocking?

Monoblocking — sometimes referred to as block paving — is the process of laying individual paving blocks or bricks to create a solid, durable surface. Each block is set into a compacted sub-base and bedding layer, then locked in place with kiln-dried sand swept into the joints.

The result is a neat, structured finish with a wide choice of colours, patterns, and textures. Block paving driveways and paths are extremely hardwearing, frost-resistant, and easy to repair if a single block is ever damaged — making them a practical as well as an attractive choice.

Block Paving Colours Design

Block Paving Colours & Design Ideas

One of the great advantages of monoblocking is the sheer variety of styles available. Block paving colours range from natural clay tones of buff, red, and charcoal through to contemporary greys and blacks. Popular block paving design ideas include:

  • Herringbone – The most common laying pattern for driveways, offering excellent interlocking strength.
  • Stretcher bond – A classic, clean look similar to traditional brickwork.
  • Basketweave – A decorative pattern well suited to paths and patios.
  • Contrasting borders – Using a different colour or size block to frame the main surface.
  • Mixed colours – Blending two or more tones for a bespoke, individual look.

Black block paving in particular has become increasingly popular, giving driveways a bold, modern appearance that complements contemporary house styles.

How We Lay Block Paving: Our Process

Every monoblocking project follows a proven, step-by-step installation process:

  • Site survey & quote – We visit your property, assess the area, and provide a detailed no-obligation quote.
  • Excavation – We dig out the existing surface to the correct depth for the sub-base.
  • Sub-base preparation – A compacted MOT Type 1 hardcore base is installed and levelled. This is the foundation of a long-lasting paving driveway.
  • Edge restraints – Concrete haunching and kerbs are installed around the perimeter to keep the blocks in place.
  • Bedding layer – Sharp sand is spread and screeded to an even depth, ready to receive the blocks.
  • Block laying – Your chosen paving blocks are laid to the agreed pattern, cut to fit at edges and around obstacles.
  • Compaction & sanding – The surface is vibrated with a plate compactor and kiln-dried sand swept into the joints to lock the blocks together.
  • Final clean & inspection – We clean the finished surface and carry out a full inspection before handover.

We take pride in our workmanship and will not leave a job until we’re satisfied it meets our standards — and yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does monoblocking cost?

he cost of monoblocking depends on the size and complexity of the project, the type of paving blocks chosen, and access to the site. As a rough guide, a standard block paving driveway typically costs from around £50 to £100 per square metre, including labour and materials. A single driveway can range from approximately £1,500 to £4,500, while a larger double driveway may cost more. For an accurate price tailored to your project, contact S. Matthews Paving for a free site survey and quote.

The cost of block paving a driveway varies according to size, block type, sub-base requirements, and any additional features such as steps or edging. Block paving driveways start from around £1,500 for a compact single driveway, rising to £5,000 or more for larger areas or premium block choices. We always provide a full written quotation before any work begins so there are no surprises.

Laying block paving involves excavating the area to the correct depth, compacting a hardcore sub-base, screeding a layer of sharp sand, laying the blocks in the chosen pattern, and finally vibrating the surface and filling the joints with kiln-dried sand. It is a skilled job that requires the right equipment and experience to achieve a level, durable finish. S. Matthews Paving handles the full installation process from start to finish.

To clean monoblock paving, start by removing loose debris with a stiff brush or leaf blower. For general dirt and algae, a pressure washer on a medium setting is usually very effective. For more stubborn staining, a specialist block paving cleaner can be applied first. Avoid using excessive pressure on the joints, as this can dislodge the jointing sand. After pressure washing, you may need to top up the kiln-dried sand in the joints. An annual clean helps keep your monoblock drive looking its best.

Monoblocking and block paving refer to the same type of installation. ‘Monoblocking’ is the term more commonly used in Scotland, while ‘block paving’ is used more widely across the rest of the UK. Both terms describe the same product and process — laying individual interlocking blocks or paving bricks to create a hard-wearing surface.

A professionally installed monoblocked driveway can last 20 to 30 years or more with proper maintenance. The key to longevity is a well-prepared, compacted sub-base and quality materials. Individual blocks can be replaced if they become damaged, which is one of the practical advantages of this type of surfacing.

There is a wide range of block paving colours available, from natural clay tones such as buff, red, brindle, and charcoal, to contemporary options including grey and black block paving. Blocks also vary in texture, from smooth to tumbled (weathered) finishes. We can bring samples to your home so you can see how different colours look in situ before making a decision.

In most cases in Scotland, you do not need planning permission for a new driveway if the surface is permeable (such as block paving with permeable jointing) or if drainage is directed to a lawn or border. However, regulations can vary depending on your property and local council. We recommend checking with your local planning authority if you are in any doubt, and we are happy to advise on suitable permeable options.
